Still working on cleaning out my email and came across this photo. I made the two pieces on the left when I was a Core Student at Penland School of Crafts in the mid 80's. I remembered the little bronze dog that I had given away (why? I don't know, probably because the material was unfamiliar and it confused me) but the other piece I really don't remember, though it looks like something I would have made and apparently I did make it!! It's fun to see old work, especially when it's in the company of such a good looking cat!!

There was a lovely obituary in yesterday's Washington Post about Malcolm Davis. I met him in the early 80's at Penland School of Crafts. My brightest memory was when one time he came into check on an electric bisque firing of his porcelain (which surely should have been cooling by then) and the kiln was still going.... hours and hours later to cone????? 25 ??? who knows how hot it got. When the kiln finally cooled and he was able to pry loose one of the melted pots from the shelf, it was so hard that you could throw it across the room, and it wouldn't break. This year I had the opportunity to participate at the Pottery show at the Old Church in Demerest N.J. Perhaps the only reason I was there, was because for several years Malcolm had been campaigning for me to be included. It took a while but his enthusiasm, passion, and ability to persuade prevailed. He later wrote to me, after I had been accepted saying, "you owe me a pot now"!!!! jokingly, but I would have happily given him a pot had his life not been cut short. I felt badly not to have told him about my experience at the show, I was just about to write to him the week after the show ended to thank him when I heard about his death...... So, better late than never, Thank you so much Malcolm, wherever you are. Thank you for your support, and for your amazing positive spirit, that will endure in memories, and all of your pottery that is out there in the world. You know when you notice something for the first time, and then you realize it is everywhere all around you, but you just never noticed consciously? Like a word, or a concept, or a native plant? My neighbor has the most glorious red bushy thing. I couldn't believe I didn't remember it in all its glory from years past. Then I started looking around, and realized little self sown shaggier varieties are all over the place, some even on our property. Actually quite a few small ones here and there. When they are green they are not too exciting to look at, but apparently come October they lose their anonymity in an explosion of color. In the spring, I am going to find some little shoots, and nurture them so that one day, I too will have an incredible red burst come October. Here is my little Claude, nearly one year old. He is so nice. I feel really lucky to have found him.

We are in Chicago for 2 days to visit friends some of which are exhibiting at the SOFA Chicago show. The best part is we got to stay way way up high in the Hancock building it took two elevators to get here! These photos don't do it justice, but the view is amazing. Huge, expansive, It feels like we are on edge of the Ocean, and the colors of the light changing are so lovely. I feel like I am up in a cloud. So this is what it feels like to be really tall! I like it.

This is the only photo I took at Sofa. Part of a painting by Beth Bojarski. I really liked the plaid shirt and nothing else!! Best part of being up so high...cloud shadows over lake Michigan.
