Brazilian Potter - Tota

Image
Antonio Pascoal Regis, known as Tota, was born in 1932 in the Pernambucan city of Tracunhaém, one of the chief pottery making centers in the Northeast. Stemmed from the purest tradition of potters in his city, Tota dedicated to this art from very early, having also been a worker in ceramics industries in São Paulo. He moved in 1968 to João Pessoa, where he died in 2002. He made his useful and decorative pieces with clay collected from deposits in his region, that he prepared by sifting and packing with his feet. His heads and human figures in expressionistic style are remarkable. Tota used a potter’s foot lathe and other modeling techniques; he decorated them with different tone enamels and burnt his pieces in a rustic log kiln. He held several exhibits and left a significant assortment of works in museums and private collections.

Pottery Thursday = Barbara Diduk

Image
Barbara Diduk was the first person to teach me about ceramics  at Washington University in 1979.    I remember the way she could throw really narrow expanses on her pots on a wooden Leach style treadle wheel,   The simplicity of her surface, combined with the subtle movement of the clay has always inspired me.  She was making functional pots back then.

St. Croix Pottery Tour - final day

Image
Liz Quackenbush is another one of the potterys on our stop of the tour.   She makes great pots, the color is all wrong in my photos, so you'll have to go to her website to see what they really look like.  Love her painted imagery.  Its the last day of the tour, and I will be so glad to get home.  I wonder how much Claude has grown in 2 weeks?
