My friend told me to watch this movie a long time ago, and finally Saturday night I did it. It is haunting, but in the best way. You can actually watch it (I just discovered this now) here for free! And there is a bonus of some really beautiful pottery that is being used in the movie that inspired me. The soup and mixing bowls and a tea set were memorable among others.. 2 thumbs up!

I think it is Acronicta americana, the American dagger moth caterpillar or maybe not?! Claude discovered this little guy yesterday. I've seen snapping turtles here before, but never a painted one. Did you know that painted turtle lived 15 million years ago and can live up to 55 years. This species knows how to survive! I'll be on the lookout for more wildlife!

This song got stuck in my head Sunday morning, really stuck but in a good way. I found it by accident waiting for the dogs to come back about 6:15 and it had me dancing before I was even awake. Sorry about the advertisement, just fast forward through it if you can. The song has a great beat and lyrics, I'm not sure about the video, but just listen......

"My parents are Dutch, and they used their china, their silver, every day. I think it's a largely American mentality to save the 'best' things for later, to protect them so much that you don't enjoy them. They didn't do that in Holland. If something happened to an old platter, that simply added to its story because it happened in your life. It became a memory instead of a scar. Authenticity rules!" ~Annie Brahler I read the quote above on Kristen Kieffer's page yesterday, and it hit home. My mother was always saving everything nice, to protect it when I was growing up. On the other hand my pickle making cousin uses everything she owns. And true, things do get a little banged up, but everyone is able to derive so much pleasure from the experience. I probably fall somewhere in between with a tendency towards "saving". Here's to honoring our battle wounds and being a little less protective. Cheers! Daniela Tieni

The phone rang about 8:30. Hello? It was my super energetic cousin with a pronouncement. It's pickle day!! It wasn't what I had planned for the day, but I just had to go for it, since after all it was pickle day and who could fight that ? We made pickles all day and then after a dog walk and a breather, some pesto. It was so much fun, I can't remember the last time I did something like this. The recipe.... Peggy's (formerly Patti's) Bread and & Butter Pickles makes 7 pints 25 pickling cucumbers sliced 1/4 in 8 sweet med. sized onions sliced thin 1/2 Cup Kosher Salt layer cucumbers onion and salt and let sit for 2.5 hours undisturbed in a large bowl In a large pot 5 cups of apple cider vinegar 2.5 cups sugar 2 Tablespoons celery seed 2 Tablespoons mustard seed 2 teaspoons turmeric 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves bring to a boil and turn off and let sit Drain pickles/onions well in a colander. Add to the sweet brine and reheat until hot. Water Bath Fill
